A pit bull was put down Wednesday night (Aug. 9) after attacking a greyhound in a Saanich park over the weekend, causing serious and possibly life-threatening injuries.

CRD Animal Control Services was in charge of the investigation and was looking into declaring the pit bull a dangerous dog after it escaped from a neighbouring backyard and bit an on-leash greyhound in the neck at Reynolds Park.

CRD spokesperson Andy Orr confirmed the pit bull’s death in a statement to Black Press Media Thursday.

“We worked with the owner to do the right thing for the community,” Orr wrote.

He added the CRD is still looking into possible fines following the attack.

A GoFundMe page has been launched to support the owner’s rising vet bills as Misha the greyhound fights to recover from serious injuries to the throat and chest.

He was rushed to Central Animal Hospital following the attack and underwent emergency surgery, and will need more procedures to heal properly.

After being adopted from a rescue organization a few weeks ago, Misha was just settling into his new home with his owner and two other greyhounds.

“Misha is a young and gentle greyhound who was given up by his previous family in July,” the page read. “He had already gone through neuter surgery and dental work before finding his forever home.”

Misha’s owner is also an artist and is offering to do pet portrait commissions to help with vet costs. Her work can be found on the Sighthounds of Vancouver Island BC Facebook page.

At the time of publication, the GoFundMe had already raised more than $7,000.

Those looking to support Misha and his owners can do so here.
