Through historic photos, this volume traces the development, production and deployment of this iconic piece of military equipment from the drawing boards to the Cold War battlefields of Europe.

In 1949, the US Army wanted an artillery gun that could fire a nuclear warhead in the event that guided missiles and long-range bombers proved insufficient in delivering atomic weapons. The result was the M65, 280mm Atomic Cannon. On May 25, 1953, at 0830 hours, an M65 of A Battery, 867th Field Artillery Battalion, let loose with the only nuclear round the type would ever fire.

Six battalions of the M65 would eventually be deployed, most in Europe with one battalion sent to the Korean Peninsula. Though never used in combat, they served as a significant tactical nuclear deterrent in the early stages of the Cold War.

Good book

This is a fabulous collection of photos. Some were taken at military museums, particularly the surviving "Atomic Annie" at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Others are period black and white photos taken in the 1950s at US and West German training or deployment bases. The photos depict an incredible level of construction and equipment operations detail. There is much description showing how the two tractors were connected to the gun carriage. There are also several photos showing the general manufacturing of the guns at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, Pennsylvania.

The "Introduction" (15 pages) describes the antecedent designs of the tractor / prime mover and transport platform or carriage. Appendix 1 contains a 1-1/4 page tabulation of the gun and carriage weights and dimensions. There is also some information on gun performance such as muzzle velocity, range, and shell weight.

My only criticism is that there is little technical information on the design characteristics or development history of the gun and carriage. This is not a book that goes into the level of detail as one would find in a book on artillery by Ian Hogg.

I have read elsewhere that the US Army supposedly derived a lot of the design concept and details from the German 170 / 210 mm gun and howitzer mounting and from the German 280 mm K5 railroad gun designs. That isn't mentioned here.

With the benefit of hindsight, the guns were probably a waste of money and engineering effort. Twenty were constructed. They were only in service about 10 years (1953 - 1963) before they were replaced by tactical short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs). They were an impressive example of artillery mechanical engineering, though. The idea of shooting a 15 kiloton atomic shell to explode only 17 miles from the gun and crew was probably not all that well thought out, I suspect. The Soviets had similar misplaced thinking, developing and manufacturing eight nuclear capable 410 mm guns and 420 mm mortars in the 1950s.

I was quite pleased with this book. While it did not have as much information as I had hoped for on the ammunition (shells/projectiles, powder bags, and propellant containers) for the 280mm cannon it did have a lot of good information on unit organization of the 280mm gun battalions to include key pieces of support equipment. The various images showing the mishaps with the transport of this heavy weapon system were also quite revealing. Definitely a book for any fan of the 280mm cannon or the serious modeler that wishes to build a model of this subject from the three kits currently available.

To date, there are few books on M65Atomic Cannon, and only the TANKOGRAD technical manual series has been compiled, so this book with over 350 photos is wonderful.
However, the explanation from development to production and operation is halfway, and there is no description in the text regarding the number of units produced for both the M65Atomic Cannon main body (20 gate production) and the M249 / M250 trailer (each produced 33 units). For the M65Atomic Cannon itself, there is only a description that 20 units were produced in the photo commentary on page 19.

In addition, in the item of “Details of T1 (prototype 240mm gun)”, there are only two pages of photos of the existing T1, for some reason afterwards it is a photo of the M65 280mm gun in production, and the description about T1 is also in the commentary There is none.
Also, there are nearly 80 pages of photos of existing vehicles, but it is unfortunate that the color photos are only 9 pages and most of them are monochrome photos. I wanted you to post it in full color.
If it is just a photo book related to Atomic Cannon, it is recommended because there are many first-time photos.
From development to production and operation, TANKOGRAD's technical manual series can be understood in detail and is recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tema esotico
Reviewed in Italy on July 17, 2022
