Newark, N.Y. - The greyhound attacked and injured by another dog in Newark earlier this month has died from its injuries.

According to our news partners at the Times of Wayne County, Reggie, the rescued greyhound, suffered deep gashes to both sides of his neck and had the skin on both of his legs taken completely off.

The dog responsible for the attack, named Rocky, was taken by animal control and determined to be a vicious dog and would be put down.

On April 20, someone attempted to free Rocky from its pen at animal control in Newark. The attempted rescue was timed to prevent the animal responsible for a vicious attack from being destroyed.

"Someone tried to take a hammer or some device like that and break the padlock off the door," Chief Chrystler told 13WHAM's Jane Flasch.

Rocky's owner, Vicki Cook, said her dog is being targeted because he's a mixed breed pit bull.

Reggie's owner, Lisa Matthaeus, disagrees.

"If you want a dangerous dog, keep it," she said. "It's not about dog breeds, it's about keeping your aggressive or dangerous dog under control 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

Friends of the family set up a GoFundMe page with more information about the dog.
