Player one

Igor Lukyanov loved games as a kid, so much so that right about when he was 12 years old, whenever a game of his would stop working, he’d simply take the matter into his own hands.

“When I was really small, I wanted to play games,” he said. “Then at some point my computer stopped working, stopped loading games… and I wanted to play so much. So if the game is not working, you make your own game to play.”

Easy enough… in theory. It did help that Igor’s older brother, already five years ahead of him in making games, nudged him in the right direction.

But in hindsight, Igor pretty much taught himself, mostly by doing, but definitely not without lots of trial and error, “lots of back and forth.”

Until finally, in 2005, while still studying computer science in Belarus and holding down a job, Igor struck out on his own and created what would be known as Pozirk Games, a casual games website, which he pieced together by working around his school and work schedule. “Don’t tell my previous boss,” he says with a sly smile.

The mission behind the site, in his words, was to “give players a pleasant and relaxed experience, so they can forget about their problems and enjoy the gameplay.”

And that’s the legacy Igor envisions for Pozirk Games, something that’s built for people who want (and sometimes really need) a game for a break in the middle of their day, a little mental reset that we all need now and then.

So, if you visit Pozirk.com today, that’s exactly what you’ll find. Think comfort food, but in game form.

The titles there feel familiar and approachable right away, from Solitaire to Mahjong. They’re the kinds of games that you see yourself enjoying with a cup of coffee, while waiting for your next appointment, or as you’re unwinding after a long workday.

And it’s not just something Igor has to imagine either; in fact, he hears from his players all the time.

“I have had folks playing my games for 10 years already,” he said, proudly. “They even send me happy new year [messages].”

The power up behind free play

Launching games is one thing, but building a business… that’s something else entirely.

As Igor tells it, he spent the first few years toiling away, making games because he loved the process of creating something new, even if it didn’t exactly pay the bills. “From 2008 to the end of 2013 it was absolutely not profitable,” he remembered. “But I liked it so much, I didn’t care back then.”

Except that, eventually, he needed to somehow support all the work he was putting into Pozirk.

In the end, Igor found an answer, and it was in the form of ads. By showing ads on his website, as well as in the apps he built as mobile gaming took off, players could keep accessing them for free, while he could keep building and maintaining them.

“I think it’s the best middle ground between users and developers,” he says of ads. “If players are getting the games for free, then ads are what help make that possible.”

With ads becoming the business model that made the most sense, Igor turned to Google AdSense for his website and Google AdMob in his apps. Part of the reason was simply timing: “When I started the website, [AdSense] was basically the only thing available,” he said.

But what kept him around was their reliability.

“With Google, it’s never happened that ads were broken or statistics were wrong,” he said, contrasting it with other ad providers. And just as important, “I always get paid on time.”

And that dependable stream of ad revenue has made all the difference: he can make his games free for the folks who want them.

“I think ads are the best middle ground between users and developers. If players are getting the games for free, then ads are what help make that possible.”

Achievement unlocked: independence

The results of Igor’s approach speak for themselves: Igor’s two flagship titles — All-in-One Solitaire and All-in-One Mahjong — have each crossed the 1 million download mark on Google Play, while also picking up some pretty impressive accolades along the way.

All-in-One Solitaire was a top card game on Yahoo! Games in 2013, and All-in-One Mahjong won WildTangent’s Best Game of the Year award in 2015.

But if you ask Igor what he’s most happy about, he’s quick to say that it’s the independence. “I could quit my job and just work for myself and do whatever I want.”

That freedom also shows up in how he runs Pozirk Games. Sure, he’s tried growing a team before, but quickly learned that it wasn’t his style. “I’m not a big fan of dealing with employees,” he admitted.

And plus, he’s got something new to help him out anyway: AI.

Just take translation work, for instance, which he used to outsource: “I’ve stopped needing to do that because now you can translate with [AI].” And he also appreciates how AI helps him with some of the visuals in his games, especially for a one-person shop with more limited means: “Graphics, I can now do with AI.”

But some real help came when he needed to update his website. His current site had been “the same for almost 15 years,” he said, mostly because it works for his audience.

He’s been hesitant to make changes that might irk any of his longtime players, but using AI has given him a way to test out new ideas for the site more carefully.

The technology has also changed the nature of how Igor works. Instead of building himself, he finds himself telling AI how to build it for him. “You have to have a really good prompt. I keep having to refine my prompts in order to finally get what I want.”

As for what’s next, Igor muses that he may make another game, simply because he still loves the craft. But no matter what he tries next, he makes one thing explicit: Pozirk Games isn’t something he’s looking to cash out of.

“Sure, I’ve had offers to buy my games, but I’m definitely not going to sell them,” he said. “My business is part of my personality. It’s who I am.”
