Excellence in Materials Testing
Struers hardness testers are focused on providing customers a high degree of repeatability
and reproducibility, factors essential in quality control. Easy-operation features such as automated
test procedures and integrated image analysis help personnel to work faster and more
accurately. For most applications Struers offers solutions that can suit your particular needs.
Hardness Testing
Hardness testing is universally used in quality control, research and development. The main
purpose of the hardness test is to determine the suitability of a material, or the particular heat
treatment to which the material has been subjected. Many factors can influence the hardness
measured and, apart from the material itself, can be related to the equipment or the measurement.
The STRuERS Duramin hardness testers are state-of-the-art software-controlled devices which enable
micro- and macro hardness tests to be performed rapidly, accurately and reliably. The hardness testers are
equipped with a unique test load range, covering many applications. Struers Duramin hardness
testers are particularly suitable for industrial research and in quality control. The EMCO-TEST line of the
Struers hardness testers range from portable and bench-top hardness testers to large custom-made
in-line systems. These hardness testers are particularly suitable for industrial quality control.

MICRO HARDNESS TESTERS
DuraScan is a state-of-the-art hardness testing system with unique test load range from
10 gf to 10 kgf, covering many applications. Fully automatic test cycles and hardness evaluation
ensure the highest repeatability and reproducibility. The optional overview camera makes
it easy to select starting points and test series with just a few mouse clicks. Intuitive software
following the natural workflow of performing the hardness test procedure. Ideal for CHD
measurements and testing of welds. Available in semi- and fully automatic versions.
ecos Workflow
▼
Automatic turret for DuraScan
The DuraScan is controlled by the ecos Workflow software for fully automatic measuring
and hardness progression evaluation. With built-in statistics functions and report editor.
The software is workflow oriented meaning that the layout of the software follows the natural
workflow of the software, with functions only available when needed. The result is an
extremely intuitive and user-friendly software requiring a minimum of training.
The hardness testing workflow – step by step
Vertical test head
The DuraScan hardness testers are based
on an asymmetric and compact design. On
the automatic versions the stage is only
moveable in the x-direction whereas the test
head is moveable in the y- and z-directions.
The advantage of this patented concept
is increased testing speed and very high
positioning accuracy.

Overview camera
On DuraScan with the overview camera option you have the possibility
of easily position and execute your test series with just a few
mouse clicks. You can save single and multiple test point series as
templates and easily position them across your sample.
This feature is very helpful if you are performing repetitive or high
volume CHD-measurements or just want easy set-up and execution
of your test series.
Welds
The overview camera allowing you
to view the entire sample and place
test points via mouse clicks
When material is welded together, you often want to check the quality
of the welded sample by performing hardness measurements at
various places across your sample. Typically, a line of indentations
is made a few mm parallelly to the sample edge across the sample
surface. In particular the hardness around the heat affected zone
(HAZ) is of interest, as too high hardnesses might incur risks to
the strength of the weld.
Base material
Heat affected zone
As your test series usually are performed over a large area or long
distance, they can be difficult to carry out under a normal objective
lens. With a fully automatic DuraScan hardness tester with the
overview camera option you have the possibility to easily position
and execute your test series - with just a few mouse clicks.
You can also save your test point patterns
as templates for future use. All
this will save you valuable time during
both setup and execution of the test
series.
the overview camera on DuraScan
Case Hardness Depth Measurements
(CHD-Measurements)
CHD-measurements are performed in order to evaluate the hardness
depth of surface hardened materials. The output of the measurement
is typically a value in mm or other suitable unit that indicates
the distance from the sample surface to a specific pre-determined
hardness value (the hardness limit). The value is then compared
with pre-determined standards. The exact procedure of the measurement
depends on the utilised surface hardening process as well as
the sample type. Usually a series of indentations is performed in a
particular pattern, propagating from the sample surface to the centre
of the sample. The hardness values are then plotted in a graph and
you can then read out at which distance from the sample surface
you have reached a certain hardness value.
Plot showing CHD (Eht) value
Illumination system
The increasing size of the indentations
indicates decreasing hardness
of material.
Together will all newer Struers hardness testers, the DuraScan, is
based on an LED illumination system. In contrast to traditional halogen
light bulb systems a LED system produces a constant illumination
intensity throughout the day and over its lifetime. Additionally
the DuraScan automatic adjusts the illumination to fit the actual
sample surface, producing uniform testing
conditions for all sample types, thus not
influencing the calibration. These are just
additional factors influencing the reliability of
your hardness test – and just another reason
to choose a Struers hardness tester.
