After years of anticipation, Watchmen finally whisks into theaters this weekend.

Fans are coming out in droves for Zack Snyder’s movie version of the groundbreaking graphic novel: The film raked in $4.6 million with Thursday midnight showings, according to Variety, and accounted for 91 percent of Fandango‘s total ticket sales for the weekend.

But it’s not all about the box office. Watchmen is something of a sacred text among the comic book faithful, and Snyder’s violent movie version remains fairly faithful to the source material.

Reviews have been wildly mixed. Wired.com gave the film two thumbs up with some reservations. But moviegoers and Watchmen fanboys will be the ultimate judges.

Angel Carreras of Bakersfield, California, who dressed as The Comedian for an opening-night showing, called Watchmen "the best comic book movie ever."

"It does what The Dark Knight set out to do, telling a dark story, having you question the morals of the characters," he told Wired.com in an e-mail interview. "It’s also the most faithful adaptation of any comic, or anything for that matter! God bless Zack Snyder."

Now it’s your turn.

Did Watchmen live up to your expectations? How did you like Malin Akerman as Silk Spectre II? Did Billy Crudup do justice to Dr. Manhattan? What about Jackie Earle Haley’s retribution-seeking Rorschach? And the Owl Ship: Hit or miss?

Weigh in below.
