Edna is short in stature, but her personality is bigger than Mr. Incredible. Her fast-talking, quick-witted disposition can be seen from the very first moment she’s introduced. When Bob Parr comes out of retirement and arrives at Edna’s front gate, she beats away her own security guard and takes the call herself. With only the top half of her face visible in the monitor, and her nose pressed up against the glass, she can’t help but notice that Bob is quite a bit bigger than be used to be… or as she puts it, [Insert clip, My god, you’ve gotten fat]. And there’s a lot more where that came from.
#9: Showing Jack-Jack’s New Suit to Bob “Incredibles 2” (2018)
After Auntie Edna babysits Jack-Jack for the first time, they are the best of friends. She even adds him to her elaborate security system. But more on that later. Since Jack-Jack has started showing superpowers, naturally, Edna has made him a super suit prepared to handle any and all of his unpredictable powers. In a parallel scene to the one in the first film where Edna shows Elastigirl the super suits she’s made for the family, here she shows Bob Jack-Jack’s suit with the same excitement and passion she has for all of her creations.

As you can imagine, the secrets of Edna’s super suit designs must be guarded with only the highest level of security possible. When Elastigirl visits Edna to find out what Bob is doing, Edna must enter several levels of security, including a long password, an eye scanner, and voice identification. It’s hilarious just how thorough her security is. But the best moment comes when the system detects Elastigirl, and nearly blows her away with a ray gun that comes down from the ceiling. Fortunately, Edna adds a quick, “and guest,” to retract them. Edna doesn’t play when it comes to home security.

As Edna puts it, she used to design for gods. So, when Bob goes to Edna for a patch job on his super suit, it’s all she can do to hold in her glee at getting to take a break from designing for super models and bask in her former glory again, too. But, Edna Mode does not beg. She doesn’t just ask Bob if she can make a new suit for him, instead she plays hard to get, until he makes the suggestion, and she graciously accepts.

Speaking of the new super suits, Edna Mode does not do anything halfway. So, after creating a new super suit for Bob, she takes the idea and runs with it. When Elastigirl comes to Edna to ask her about what Bob is up to, she shows off all the new super suits she made for the whole Incredibles family. The absolutely deranged look on Edna’s face along with her commentary as she shows off the suits is hilarious, especially when compared to how terrified Elastigirl looks.

After watching “Incredibles 2,” we all wanted to see a little more of what went down when Edna was taking care of Jack-Jack. Well, in an Edna Mode centric short, we get just that. While babysitting Jack-Jack, Edna navigates his growing powers as they appear spontaneously and creates a suit to manage them. In the first “Incredibles” movie, Edna made it very clear how she idolizes supers, and when Jack-Jack seems initially self-conscious about his new suit, she assures him that he is a tiny god.
#4: Hobo Suit “The Incredibles” (2004)
Edna’s has a hilarious vocabulary which is, hands down, one of the best parts of her character. Only Edna Mode would describe an out of fashion super suit design as a hobo suit. When Mr. Incredible comes to her for a patch job on his old super suit, Edna insists that the suit is no good anymore, like only Edna can. Of course, as Bob points out, Edna designed that first suit, but as Edna points out, Edna never looks back, it distracts from the now.

Superheroes inspire hope to the people that they save, but who inspires the superheroes? For the Incredibles, that job is claimed by Edna Mode. When Elastigirl is depressed over the super secrets Bob has been keeping from her, she goes to Edna for a shoulder to cry on, and unloads on her in a vulnerable, sobbing mess. But Edna has no sympathy for her whining, and instead empowers her to go confront the problem, fight, and win! She might not be the one saving the world, but she is the hero to the heroes.

To the Incredibles, Edna is much more than their super suit designer, she is family. When Bob is desperate for sleep when he is taking care of the kids by himself, he takes a newly super powered Jack-Jack to Edna to babysit. Though she is reluctant at first, once she sees Jack-Jack’s interesting powers, she can’t resist. Of course, she ends up enjoying her time with the tiny god and makes Jack-Jack a brand new super suit. This is such a sweet and funny moment, where Edna becomes Auntie Edna.

Edna’s “no capes” speech is iconic. It has been said that not all heroes wear capes. Well, if it is Edna creating the super suits, then no heroes would wear capes. While discussing designing a new super suit with Bob, he suggests adding a cape to his look, but Edna aggressively rejects the idea. Her powerful monologue, and the accompanying montage, listing all of the superheroes previously foiled by their own capes, is hilarious and unforgettable. After seeing all that, you have sold us Edna, "NO CAPES."
