Marshall Mathers to Slim Shady: Looking back at Eminem's career on his 50th birthday

In 1999, Eminem released his debut album "The Slim Shady LP," which went triple-platinum. Produced by Dr. Dre, it introduced the rapper's alter ego, Slim Shady, a maniacal rap machine that spits insults with every breath. Here, Eminem performs during his Up in Smoke tour in 2000.

In 2000, Eminem released "The Marshall Mathers LP." The album sold more than a million copies in its first week, spawned several hit songs like "The Real Slim Shady" and snagged the Grammy Award for best rap album.

Over the course of his career, Eminem has collected 15 Grammys and 44 total nominations. Here, he's pictured accepting the award for best rap album in 2001.

Eminem's devil-may-care lyricism sparked outrage in the gay community. To combat allegations of homophobia, Eminem performed a duet with Elton John at the Grammy Awards in 2001.

With four successful albums under his belt, Eminem took a break from recording solo material from 2004 to 2009. The rapper had been dealing with substance abuse issues and spent some time in rehab during this period.

Eminem joined Rihanna onstage at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards to perform their hit song "Monster."

Eminem performed "Lose Yourself" at the 2020 Academy Awards, 17 years after the song won him an Oscar.

"His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy / There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti": These often-memed lyrics from Eminem's "Lose Yourself" leant themselves to a new business venture for the rapper. In 2021, he opened a Detroit restaurant aptly named "Mom's Spaghetti."

On Feb. 13, 2022, Eminem joined 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige and Snoop Dogg to perform for the Super Bowl halftime show.
