If
you
want
to
go
to
a
place
that
is
out
of
the
way
and
beautiful,
take
that
exit
off
of
Highway
16
right
outside
of
Coyame,
park
in
the
dusty
parking
lot,
and
then
walk
up
the
inclined
steps
(which
are
about
5,000
feet
above
sea
level)
to
the
little
building.
Once
inside,
friendly
staff
will
welcome
you
and
charge
you
a
few
pesos
(very
affordable).
A
friendly
guide
will
take
you
through
the
1-kilometer-long,
one-hour
walking
tour
of
the
caves.
The
caves
are,
of
course,
quite
old.
They
date
back
to
360
million
years
ago,
when
a
sea
covered
the
area.
As
the
sea
receded,
the
water
washed
out
the
cave
system.
People
have
been
sneaking
in
and
out
since
1884.
The
state
university
has
taken
over
maintenance
and
upkeep,
and
they've
done
a
great
job.
My
five
year-old
loved
it.
She
had
lots
of
fun,
and
the
guide
was
friendly
in
answering
all
questions.
Don't
be
intimidated
by
those
steps,
though.
If
you
have
mobility
issues,
however,
this
may
not
be
for
you.
There
is
a
ramp
to
reach
the
top,
but
you
definitely
be
able
to
walk/stand
for
an
hour
to
enjoy
the
full
cave
system.
