Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner Confirm Divorce, Call Split a “United Decision”

Only three days after news broke that Joe Jonas had hired a divorce lawyer, Jonas and wife Sophie Turner have released a joint statement confirming that they are separating after four years of marriage.

On Wednesday, September 6, Jonas and Turner shared their joint statement — simple black text on a grey background — to their respective Instagram accounts with the comments turned off. “After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage,” the statement begins. “There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”

On Sunday, September 3, TMZ first reported the news that Joe Jonas, 34, and Sophie Turner, 27, were headed for divorce as Jonas reportedly contacted two Los Angeles-based divorce lawyers. On September 5, NBC News and TODAY confirmed that Jonas had officially filed for divorce from Turner; Jonas called their marriage “irretrievably broken” in the filing, which also noted that "it is in the best interests of the minor children that the parties have shared parental responsibility."

“A parenting plan should be established, which addressed all parenting issues and contains a timesharing schedule providing for frequent and continuing contact with both parties," the petition continued. “The children have been residing with their father in Miami and other locations throughout the United States.” Representatives for Jonas and Turner did not immediately respond to Teen Vogue's request for comment.

The singer and former Game of Thrones star first connected via Instagram DM in 2016, were engaged by 2017, and wed in 2019 with two wedding ceremonies in Las Vegas and France. The couple shares two young children: daughter Willa, born in 2020, and another baby girl they welcomed in July 2022.

Just three weeks ago, on August 14, Turner posted a sweet photo carousel to Instagram of her and Jonas holding hands while walking out of Yankee Stadium following the Jonas Brothers' two-night engagement at the iconic venue.
