A peek at Bugatti’s US$18.7 million La Voiture Noire – the world’s most expensive new car
Bugatti is giving its one-off La Voiture Noire, the world's most expensive new car, its United States debut at this week’s prestigious car show, Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance, in Monterey, California, according to CNBC.
The car – first seen in public at March’s Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland – costs US$18.7 million. Only one example will be made and sold – the car that is now being exhibited at the event, which began on Tuesday.
La Voiture Noire, or “The Black Car”, pays homage to the history of the luxury French car maker founded in 1909, with the brand acquired by the German carmaker Volkswagen Group in 1998.
Italian industrial Ettore Bugatti launched the original company in the then-German city of Molsheim – now part of France.
His son, Jean, developed four Type 57SC Atlantic coupes in the 1930s and drove one of his creations, naming it “La Voiture Noire”, which has inspired the one-off supercar.
You too can create your own US$3 million Bugatti – if you qualify
The modernised and reinterpreted supercar – which features six exhaust pipes just like the original – has already been sold to an anonymous male buyer, who agreed to buy the car based only on plans before Bugatti began to build it.
However, he will not get his hands on it for another two years at least, because Bugatti has yet to finish the work, including installing the engine.

Bugatti says La Voiture Noire’s actual price stands at US$12,306,470, with the rest of the cost made up by taxes.
The deep-black glossy car has an all-carbon-fibre body, making it extremely light.
From a standstill, it can speed from 0 to 60 miles per hour (96km/h) in 2.5 seconds and has a top speed of 261 miles per hour.
Its 16-cylinder, 8-litre, quad-turbo engine will be arranged in a “W” pattern.

This will give the Batmobile-esque car 1,500 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of torque.

The car still needs two years of work before it is completed, Bugatti told the car website, Motor1.
The vehicle has yet to be fitted with either an interior or an engine.
Bugatti started building the car in 2018 after the buyer agreed to the La Voiture Noire proposal.
