Where Can You See a Gustav Klimt Exhibition in 2023?
Gustav Klimt, a renowned artist from Austria and a key figure in the Art Nouveau movement. He is remembered for his highly decorative and intricate paintings.
Klimt co-founded the Vienna Secession in the late 19th century with a group of artists. They sought to break away from traditional artistic styles and create a new aesthetic for the modern world.
Klimt was famous for his portraits of women, including his most well-known work, ‘The Kiss’, which depicts a couple locked in an intimate embrace. He also created vibrant landscapes and works that were characterised by his signature use of gold leaf and bold, decorative patterns.
A number of fantastic immersive Gustav Klimt experiences have been held recently in cities around the world, including places such as London, Boston, Detroit, Phoenix, Toronto, and Los Angeles.
Sadly these immersive experiences have all ended, but there are plenty of other Gustav Klimt exhibitions currently ongoing. Vienna is undoubtedly the best place to see Klimt's artworks, but there are many other places around the world where you can catch a glimpse of his masterpieces in 2023.

Vienna is a city steeped in history and culture, and one of its must-visit destinations is the Belvedere Palace. This magnificent palace complex is comprised of two separate buildings, the Upper and Lower Belvedere, and is home to a vast collection of artworks from various periods.
Upper Belvedere is the more famous of the two buildings - this Baroque palace is an architectural masterpiece and boasts some of the most impressive works of art in Vienna, including the renowned Gustav Klimt collection.
The Klimt collection at the Upper Belvedere comprises a stunning display of his art, including some of his most famous works such as ‘The Kiss’ and ‘Judith’.

‘The Kiss’ is a masterpiece of Art Nouveau, depicting a couple locked in an embrace, surrounded by gold leaf and intricate patterns. The painting is a testament to Klimt's fascination with the human form and his ability to capture its beauty in a unique and captivating way.
Another notable artwork in the collection is ‘Judith’, a painting that showcases Klimt's ability to create a mysterious and intriguing mood. The painting depicts the biblical story of Judith, who is shown holding the severed head of Holofernes, an enemy general. The Lower Belvedere in Vienna was built in the 18th century as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy.
The Lower Belvedere is located just a short distance from the Upper Belvedere and it offers a unique glimpse into Vienna's rich cultural heritage. The palace is home to a vast collection of Baroque art, medieval sculpture, and contemporary works, making it a must-visit destination for art lovers.
In addition to its permanent collections, the Lower Belvedere hosts a range of temporary exhibitions throughout the year. One such exhibition for 2023 is ‘Klimt. Inspired by Van Gogh, Rodin, Matisse…’, which is the result of a close collaboration between the Belvedere and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
This exciting 2023 exhibition is dedicated to prominent international artists who influenced the work of Gustav Klimt.
The show will feature about 90 paintings, drawings, and sculptures from Klimt and other artists, carefully chosen to create intriguing encounters between Klimt's works and those of other masters. Among the artists whose work will be on display are Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Margaret MacDonald-Macintosh, Jan Toorop, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Claude Monet, Auguste Rodin, and Henri Matisse.
In addition to the exhibition, visitors to the Lower Belvedere can enjoy the palace's beautiful gardens and grounds, which offer breathtaking views of Vienna's skyline.

The Leopold Museum is a stunning contemporary art museum located in the heart of Vienna's Museum Quarter.
The collection here is primarily focused on Austrian art from the late 19th century to the present day, with an emphasis on the works of Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, two of the most important and influential artists of the period.
The museum is home to an impressive array of paintings, drawings, and sculptures, as well as a range of decorative arts, photographs, and documents that offer insight into the cultural and artistic history of Austria.
Some of the highlights of the collection include Schiele's ‘Death and the Maiden’ and Klimt's ‘Death and Life’, both of which are considered iconic works of the Vienna Secession movement.

The Secession Building is a top attraction for any art lover visiting Vienna. This iconic structure, located in the heart of Vienna's cultural district, was built in 1897 as a showcase for the city's most innovative and cutting-edge artists.
The Secession Building stands out with its striking white facade adorned with gold leaf accents and intricate Art Nouveau ornamentation.
The interior of the building is equally stunning. The main attraction is undoubtedly the Beethoven Frieze, a monumental work of art by Gustav Klimt that stretches across three walls of the building's main exhibition hall. This breathtaking, larger-than-life mural is a tribute to the great composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Spanning more than 34 meters, the artwork depicts various allegorical figures and symbols inspired by Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
These and many other works by Klimt can be found at the Secession, making it a must-visit destination.

At Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, you can expect to see an extensive range of art from various periods, including works from the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, as well as European paintings, sculptures and decorative art from the Renaissance to the Baroque period.
The museum is located in the grand Maria-Theresien-Platz, right in the city centre. Its stunning exterior architecture alone is worth a visit, with its grand dome, tall columns and intricate details.
The museum's vast collection of art will take you on a journey through history, with masterpieces from some of the world's most renowned artists, including Caravaggio, Raphael, and Rembrandt.
For the Klimt enthusiast, you won't want to miss the Kunsthistorisches Museum's breathtaking stairwell. This impressive space is decorated with 40 spandrel paintings and other ornate works that adorn the narrow sections of wall between the arches and columns. Eleven of these paintings were completed by Gustav Klimt, while the remaining pieces were crafted by his brother Ernst and Franz Matsch.
Burgtheater, Vienna

The Burgtheater is one of the most renowned and revered theatres in Vienna. This theatre has been showcasing some of the most iconic plays and performances for centuries.
The Burgtheater is located in the heart of the city, in the historic district of Innere Stadt.
Once inside, visitors are transported to a world of opulence and grandeur, with plush seating, elegant chandeliers, and stunning decor.
As you climb the grand staircase of Burgtheater, look up and marvel at the impressive ceiling paintings by Gustav Klimt and Franz Matsch. These artworks were commissioned for the theater in the late 19th century and depict scenes from Greek mythology and theater history.
The only known self-portrait of Klimt can be found in one of the paintings, which shows a scene from the Globe theatre.
MAK - Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna

The MAK - Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, has a permanent exhibition of Vienna 1900. Among the exhibition's highlights, you can admire Gustav Klimt's stunning design drawings for the mosaic frieze of the Stoclet Palace dining room in Brussels. the metre-long design plan was executed using gold leaf, silver leaf and platinum leaf.

The National Gallery in London is an iconic art museum that houses one of the greatest collections of European paintings from the 13th to the 19th centuries.
The National Gallery's latest exhibition, ‘After Impressionism: Inventing Modern Art’ invites visitors to explore a period of artistic upheaval that laid the foundation for the art of the 20th and 21st centuries.
From Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, and Paul Gauguin to younger generations of artists and their peers across Europe, this exhibit showcases nearly a hundred works. Other artists included are Gustav Klimt, Edvard Munch, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, and Wassily Kandinsky.
The exhibition features loans from institutions and private collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Frameless is one of the largest immersive art experiences in the UK and is located close to Marble Arch, London.
The attraction covers a wide variety of both artists and artistic genres and includes iconic works by Paul Cézanne, Wassily Kandinsky, Claude Monet, Canaletto, Rembrandt and Gustav Klimt to name just a few. The venue is laid out across four galleries, each differently themed, it is a multi-sensory and highly Instagram-able experience. The experience uses a mixture of mirrors, motion tracking, colour and sounds to take the visitor on a mind-bending journey.

The International Gallery of Modern Art in Venice is located in Ca 'Pesaro, one of the most important baroque palaces in the city, designed by Longhena.
The International Gallery of Modern Art in Ca’ Pesaro contains important 19th and 20th-century collections of paintings and sculptures, including masterpieces by Gustav Klimt and Auguste Rodin and remarkable works by artists such as Medardo Rosso, Adolfo Wildt and Giacomo Balla, as well as a rich selection of works by other Italian artists and an important section on graphic art.

The Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art in Nagoya, Japan, has a great collection of fine art from the 20th century. From international masters like Pablo Picasso and Gustav Klimt to the works of influential post-war artists like Morris Louis, the museum has a wealth of pieces that traced the history of various art movements.
On display is Gustav Klimt’s ‘Life is a Struggle (Golden Rider)’ which was first shown in the 18th Secession Exhibition as part of a Klimt retrospective.

The Neue Galerie New York showcases a remarkable collection of German and Austrian art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which includes highlights from the period between 1890 and 1940.
The museum is located in New York City’s Museum Mile, near the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In 2006, The museum acquired Gustav Klimt’s 1907 Portrait of ‘Adele Bloch-Bauer I’. This masterpiece of Klimt's ‘Golden Style’ has become the museum’s crown jewel and is permanently on view.
The Klimt display also includes several portraits of Vienna's society women, including two of Adele Bloch-Bauer, Gertha Loew, Elisabeth Lederer, and Ria Munk.

Gustav Klimt: Gold In Motion is located in one of New York’s earliest skyscrapers, the historic Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank. This immersive exhibition is a multi-sensory celebration of Klimt’s most iconic work, with his paintings projected and animated across the walls, floors, and pillars of the former bank’s grand marble hall and spaces.
