David Beckham has shed light on how he managed to deal with his burgeoning popularity during the height of his playing career.

The iconic soccer star offers perspective in a new four-part Netflix documentary 'Beckham', directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Fisher Stevens.

Looking back on the spotlight he was under, Beckham shared some insight in the trailer for the documentary.

"I wasn't eating, I wasn't sleeping, it took a toll on me that I never even knew myself," Beckham says when discussing an altercation with Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson in 2003.

"We were drowning."

Victoria adds: "It's really entertaining when the circus comes to town, right? Unless you're in it."

Some of the other topics talked about include Beckham's popularity on and off the pitch, as well as his family and marriage to music star and fashion designer Victoria Beckham.

In one scene Beckham is driving with his wife and family while being chased by countless paparazzi and cabers.

Despite his fame, Beckham has never shied away from being devoted to his wife and four kids - Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper Seven.

David and Victoria even discuss the beginning of their relationship, which began in the late 1990s.

"My manager kept saying, 'Try to keep it under wraps,' so we would meet in car parks, and that's not as seedy as it sounds," says Victoria.

As for his childhood, David reveals that he never really did well in school due to his passion for football.

"I never really did well at school because all I ever wanted to do was play football," Beckham says.

"I don't give up easy. I don't give up."
