Much like Civilization, UFO Enemy Unknown was another game ahead of it's time. I actually managed to complete this game back in the day. Easily one of the best Strategy games on the Amiga, an absolute gem not to be missed. Just make sure your Amiga is equipped with a hard disc to avoid the disc swapping. The sequel was brilliant too.

You know what's sad? This game and the successor are way better than the very new X-Com games released on PC and PS4.

Another game that stood the test of time. Believe it or not, I have just recently completed it for the first time. I can honestly say it's one of the best games I have played in my life. The idea is great. Perfect mix between a strategy and a tactical turn-based gameplay. AGA machine with a fast CPU and an HDD is a must. Otherwise it will play very slow. Do I recommend it in 2021? Yes! Great gameplay doesn't get old.

The only game I'd never classify as a perfect game.

The combination of nail-biting dead, hardcore tactical action, management and strategic warfare and the RPG aspects of leveling up your squad has never been bettered.

The Amiga version is rather slow, lacks night missions and has one or two other minor tweaks. Hard drive install is a must.

Also do yourself a favor and never ever save-scum. It ruins the game.

Thought I'd post a note about this one as I'm playing The Bureau these days. I didn't give UFO a 10 only on account of a rather lazy port: it doesn't reach nominal speed even on high-end Amigas and the opponent's turn can be really annoying on a stock A1200. For a turn-based game it surely is a CPU hog.

Apart from that it's still the best X-COM I've played so far: not the uninspired "more of the same but terribly hard" that is Terror from the Deep; not the rather clunky Apocalypse which I still loved, but worked surprisingly better in real-time mode than in turns. Fast-forward to the Firaxis game from 2012, which is respectful but still a compromise to make it appealing to console gamers.

I hear tales of XCOM2 as being the perfect title in the series and one of the best games ever. At this pace I'm going to need a few more years to check it out...

This (when HD installed) and the PSX version are the best versions to play. Classic game. Full of suspense, and the unintentional slapstick is fantastic.

I recently completed the 2012 remake XCOM: Enemy Unknown and am now revisiting the original. UFO: Enemy Unknown plays more like a simulation. The geoscape view is more than just set dressing and you have to keep track of where your bases and interceptors are. Research, production, purchase and information screens involve more numbers. There's also a lot more micro management. For example, you have to buy individual rounds of ammunition for your forces.

It's a very good game but it needs a long time to be completed (it took me 2 months and I played almost every day). There is one big disadvantage: last few months of game time are quite boring, you have all needed informations from aliens, you have a lot of money and full stores, so recovery missions are pointless. All you have to do is to intercept UFOs and wait for research and manufacture of Avenger.

I spent countless hours/days/weeks playing this. Definitely the AGA version is the way to go. Fantastic turn based sim. Hard to beat!

Hard drive install is the way. Before I had a hard drive I kept my Amiga on for two weeks playing this as for some reason I couldn't save games using the floppies.

This AGA version in my mind is the best. Had different and superior music than the OCS and DOS versions. Didn't have the crappy cartoony intro that was on the DOS version too.

Probably best game you can play on Amiga. Sadly the disk swapping process may kill the pleasure, so CD32 version is recommended.

I'm going to have to find a copy of this. I played its sister version "X-Com" on the PC, and it was one of the best turn-based sims I've ever experienced.

This game had it all. As well as excellent core gameplay, it had polished graphics throughout (the screenshots show it has aged very well), good user interface in all parts of the game and had good longevity (particularly if, like me, you never completed it!). 10/10
