Zombies Are Returning To ‘Call Of Duty’ With ‘Modern Warfare III’

Following

The big Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare III reveal takes place tomorrow in a special in-game Warzone event, but more and more details about this year’s entry are emerging.

One of the biggest tidbits of news is the return of zombies to the game. Zombies mode is one of the most popular across all Call Of Duty franchises, but Infinity Ward often includes other co-op modes instead. 2022’s Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II featured 2-player co-op missions and 3-player Raids, for instance. In Call Of Duty: Ghosts, players faced off against alien monsters in that game’s co-op Extinction mode.

But Sledgehammer Games is behind this year’s upcoming title and it appears Zombies will make a return. In a blog post released today, one of Activision’s bullet points reads: “Did someone say Zombies? More information coming soon on the new Modern Warfare® Zombies: The largest Zombies offering to date.”

This is good news for fans who have been pining for new Zombies content since the latest game came out. A lot of people were pretty letdown by Call Of Duty: Vanguard’s Zombies mode, so hopefully this year’s release will be a return to form. Typically, Black Ops developer Treyarch is the studio that makes the most popular Zombies modes, and it’s possible that they will have had a hand in development here, as the studios have been working more closely across modes. Treyarch took lead on Modern Warfare II’s Ranked mode, for instance.

Under Call Of Duty’s new development approach, more cross-development and unity across titles is expected, with the same engine used across developers with input from Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Sledgehammer, Raven and more. Modern Warfare III should play and feel a lot like Modern Warfare II (with some changes to mini-map, movement, etc.) rather than the massive gameplay changes we’ve seen over the past few entries. This will help integrate the games into Warzone better than the last three titles, and allow for things like guns and Operators to “carry over” between titles.

Hopefully we’ll know a lot more tomorrow after the Shadow Siege reveal event.
