Miss Paroubek, age 5, disappeared April 8 and was found dead May 9, 1911 outside Lockport, IL. She had been the subject of many newspaper stories and an intense search throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. 3,000 people attended her funeral. Her photograph was published in the Chicago Daily News and clipped by artist Henry Darger who saved photos and articles about missing and exploited children. Darger was writing a novel about a war of child slaves against their cruel adult masters on another planet. Naming Elsie "Annie Aronburg", he made her the heroic leader of the rebel children.

She lived in Chicago with her mother, Karolína Vojáèek Paroubek, and father, František Paroubek.

Bessie Krizek was her sister, and is buried at the same cemetery.
