Joe Jonas trended on Twitter in April when his ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift released her re-recording of Fearless, which featured multiple formerly-unreleased songs seemingly about their short-lived 2008 relationship (“Mr. Perfectly Fine” and “You All Over Me”). Jonas did not respond directly about them then, but in a new interview with Buzzfeed, the Jonas Brothers singer brought up his ex briefly—and shared his honest opinion about her decision to re-record her first six albums so she could own the masters.

Jonas was asked which Jonas Brothers songs he'd re-record given the opportunity. He responded with a compliment for Swift: “Good question. I think I would probably re-record our entire first album [It's About Time, which includes hit song “Year 3000.”] Just do something like what Taylor [Swift] did recently, which I thought was really clever,” he said.

Jonas described himself as being friends with Swift in June 2019. His remark came in response to Swift telling Ellen DeGeneres that the most rebellious thing she did as a teenager was “probably when I put Joe Jonas on blast on your show [about how he broke up with her in a 25-second phone call]. That was too much. Yeah, that was too much. I was 18. We laugh about it now. That was mouthy, yeah, teenage stuff there.”

Jonas said on ITV's Lorraine show that hearing Swift say that, “it did feel nice. It’s something that I probably was feeling pretty bad about when I was younger, but at the end of the day, like, I’ve moved on. I’m sure Taylor’s moved on, and it feels nice, and we’re all friends, and it’s all good. We were so young.”

While Jonas didn't respond publicly to Swift's new old tracks about him, Jonas' wife Sophie Turner was blunt about her opinion on one, “Mr. Perfectly Fine.” She posted a screenshot of herself listening to the song on her Instagram Story, writing, “it’s not NOT a bop” when it came out.

Swift's decision to re-record and release her work was prompted after Swift's old label Big Machine Label Group, which owned her first six albums' masters, was sold to Scooter Braun in 2019. Swift called Braun acquiring her catalog her “worst case scenario” in part because of the “incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years.” Braun ultimately sold Swift's catalog to Shamrock Holdings rather than Swift herself in fall 2020.

Swift wrote then that when she tried to pursue buying her masters, Braun's team tried to make her sign “an ironclad NDA stating I would never say another word about Scooter Braun unless it was positive, before we could even look at the financial records of BMLG (which is always the first step in a purchase of this nature). So, I would have to sign a document that would silence me forever before I could even have a chance to bid on my own work. My legal team said that this is absolutely NOT normal, and they’ve never seen an NDA like this presented unless it was to silence an assault accuser by paying them off 😬 He would never even quote my team a price. These master recordings were not for sale to me.” At that point, Swift confirmed she had already begun re-recording her music.
