It's been 20 years since Dexter's Laboratory launched, and we reckon the boy genius is still in his secret lair, squabbling with his sister Dee-Dee.

To mark the occasion, let's find out who the voices behind the hilarious characters were, and what else they've been up to - including a Grease icon and a Rugrats hero.

1. CHRISTINE CAVANAUGH (Dexter)

Christine had the unmistakeable cute voice of Chuckie in Rugrats and later the title character in 1995's Babe. She was a prolific voice actor and also had roles in Sonic the Hedgehog, The Powerpuff Girls, Recess and many other shows.

After voicing Dexter for its first two seasons and a handful of season three episodes, she quit voice acting to focus on her family. Sadly, she passed away in December 2014 from leukemia, aged 51.

2. CANDI MILO (Dexter)

Candi replaced Christine in season three until the show's end, and it is probably her best known role to date. However, she has provided her voice for pretty much any cartoon series from the 1990s onwards that you can think of, including Tiny Toon Adventures, Jimmy Neutron, Cow and Chicken, Hey Arnold, Johnny Bravo and a few Final Fantasy games.

3. KATHRYN CRESSIDA (Dee-Dee)

Creator Genndy Tartakovsky's college friend Allison Moore originally played Dexter's sister Dee-Dee, but was replaced by Kathryn in season two. Allison actually came back briefly in season three, but producers felt they had got used to Kathryn's voice, and was replaced once again. As cutthroat as Mandark.

Kathryn has also voiced Uta in Archer, and can be heard in various Disneyland attractions including The Haunted Mansion as Constance. She has also voiced lead characters in several video games including World of Warcraft, EverQuest and Dragon Age. She also became the first female to do live announcing for ESPN's NFL Draft coverage in 2010.

4. TOM KENNY (Valhallen)

Tom is a hero of yours without you even realising it. Aside from playing the Viking God of Rock, Tom has voiced SpongeBob SquarePants for years, as well as Heffer Wolfe in Rocko's Modern Life, the Mayor in The Powerpuff Girls, Dog in CatDog and Spyro from the Spyro the Dragon games.

Tom also took over the role of Rabbit from Ken Samson in Winnie the Pooh in 2011, and he also plays SpongeBob's pal Gary the Snail.

5. EDDIE DEEZEN (Mandark and Lalavava)

Known for his high-pitched and nasal voice, Eddie played villains Mandark in Lalavava in Dexter's Lab, Ned in Kim Possible and the Know-It-All kid in The Polar Express.

But if you're wondering where you recognise him from, he played poor geek Eugene in Grease (and Grease 2)! He specialised in nerd characters in the 1970s and 1980s including WarGames and Teenage Exorcist. A bit of a geek in real life, he claims to be The Beatles' "biggest fan", offering $100 for anyone who can answer his website quizzes correctly. Apparently, no-one ever claimed the prize.

6. ROB PAULSEN (Major Glory)

His name was Robert Paulsen. His name was Robert Paulsen. Nope, this isn't Meat Loaf from Fight Club, but another legend in the voice acting world.

He's best known for playing both Raphael and Donatello in the 1987 and 2012 versions of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Yakko and Dr Otto in Animaniacs, and Pinky from Pinky and the Brain. He has voiced over 250 animated characters and has appeared in over 1,000 commercials.

7. KATH SOUCIE (Mom)

You probably best know Jeff for playing Johnny Bravo himself from 1995 to 2004. Along with playing Dexter's father, Jeff has voiced hundreds of characters in film, TV and games, including Petrie in the Land Before Time movies, Lord Camembert in Biker Mice from Mars and Kowalski in The Penguins of Madagascar.

9. FRANK WELKER (Monkey)

Frank is a true voice acting legend. Aside from playing Dexter's powerful caged monkey, Frank has voiced Fred Jones AND Scooby-Doo since the show's creation in 1969. He has also played Megatron and others in the Transformers cartoons, and has appeared in the Michael Bay movies as Galvatron and several others.

Among his huge filmography, he has also played the martians in Mars Attacks!, George in Curious George, Garfield in several TV films, and another monkey: Abu in Aladdin.

10. DOM DELUISE (Koosalagoopagoop)

Dom was already a household name in the States by the time he played Dee-Dee's imaginary friend. He had voiced many roles in films such as The Secret of Nimh and An American Tail and had teamed up regularly with Burt Reynolds and Mel Brooks in classics like The Cannonball Run and Blazing Saddles.

He appeared in many TV shows over the years, including Ren & Stimpy, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Rugrats. He died in 2003 at the age of 75 from kidney failure.
