Liev Schreiber and Janet McTeer will lead the cast of “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” on Broadway this fall, with Schreiber cast as the Machiavellian seducer Valmont.
The actor steps into the role previously played by Dominic West in the revival, which opened at London’s Donmar Warehouse late last year. McTeer (“Mary Stuart”), who won a 1997 Tony Award for “A Doll’s House,” starred in the London staging as the scheming Marquise de Merteuil, and will reprise her role on Broadway under the direction of the Donmar’s artistic director, Josie Rourke.
Arielle Tepper Madover produces the show after backing a string of Donmar transfers including “Hamlet” (with Jude Law) and the Tony-winning “Red.” No further casting for the Broadway “Liaisons” has yet been set.
Based on Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 epistolary novel and adapted into a well-known 1988 movie with Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Hampton’s stage adaptation centers on the scheming seduction of an innocent young woman, and on a bet between Valmont and Merteuil that eventually goes sour.
“Ray Donovan” star Schreiber has a number of stage credits to his name, with his most recent Broadway outing being the 2010 revival of “A View from the Bridge” that co-starred Scarlett Johansson. Prior to “Liaisons,” McTeer will star in a New York Shakespeare Festival production of “The Taming of the Shrew” in Central Park, and O’Rourke will direct “Privacy,” starring Daniel Radcliffe, at the Public Theater this summer.

“Les Liaisons Dangereuses” begins previews Oct. 8 ahead of an Oct. 30 opening at the Booth Theater, where the show will run for 15 weeks.
