Mexican Eagle

The national symbol of Mexico in its original form. Eagle, cactus, water and fire (*atl tlachinolli). No serpent.

The top photos are of a stone carving once part of a teocalli or temple and now part of the Mexica exhibit at the National Musuem of Anthropology of Mexico in Mexico City. The bottom two are from a mural painted by Diego Rivera on the history of Mexico at the national palace of Mexico. See more photos of this mural and of the Palacio Nacional, here.

*Atl tlachinolli represents the sun setting over Lake Texcoco, but also a metaphor representing the essential elements of creation, and the duality of life.
