2 Rugby League is a contact sport and sometimes players have to show physical courage.

3 Huddersfield Giants players make their livings as professionals. But they still remember that it’s just a game!

4 Bill Shankley was the manager of Liverpool in the 1960s. He joked, “Some people say that football is a matter of life and death, but I can assure you it’s much more serious than that.”

5 Escape to Victory

6 The film ‘Escape to Victory’ was based on a true story which was even more dramatic than the film.

7 Kiev is the capital city of the Ukraine. Their football team is called Dynamo Kiev.

8 By 1940 the Ukraine had been invaded by Nazi German forces

9 Kiev had been destroyed by the Nazis.

10 This was the Dynamo Kiev team in 1939.

11 The Kiev team was disbanded. All the former players found work at the Kiev Bakery No.3. At lunchtime they played football on some derelict land.

12 A German officer went to see the team’s leader. He was the goalkeeper Nikolai Trusevich. The Germans wanted to play Dynamo Kiev in a ‘friendly’ football match.

13 The match was arranged for June 1942. Kiev played under the name Start FC. The Germans were well fed and very fit. They took an early 1-0 lead. But…

14 …Kiev equalised and then… …they scored again. The Germans were furious. The officer went to Kiev’s dressing room to tell them “not to play so keenly” or they would be shot.

15 They took no notice and went on to win 4-1!

16 The Germans did not carry out their threat but demanded a re-match. Posters went up around the city to advertise the match.

17 This time the Germans lost 6-0! They tried twice more and lost again on both occasions.

18 The Nazi leaders could not allow this humiliation to continue. They brought in the elite Flakelf team of the airforce – the Luftwaffe.

19 Even though they were warned of the consequences, the Kiev team beat the Germans 5-3. To humiliate them still further Alexei Klimenko dribbled around several defenders and the goalkeeper, stopped the ball on the goal line and kicked it back to the halfway line!

20 Several players were rounded up and sent to a death camp called Babi Yar Klimenko was killed and so too was their goalkeeper and leader Nikolai Trusevich

21 This monument stands outside Dynamo Kiev’s ground to remind the world of the brave deeds of the men of Start FC

22 Always support your team but remember … …it’s just a game. It’s not a matter of life and death!
