Guanajuato: one of Mexico’s most populated cities

Downtown Guanajuato

Have you heard of Guanajuato? is one of the most populated cities in Mexico and has 6 magical towns, 2 world heritage cities, archaeological sites, natural areas…take a look at all the places you have to visit.

Getting to know the capital of Guanajuato

It is one of Mexico’s World Heritage Cities since 1988. This colonial city was very important during the viceroyalty, since it was an important piece in the country’s War of Independence.

Here you can take a tour of cultural and religious monuments, historical museums and much more. If you feel like taking home a souvenir, we recommend you to buy jewelry in the different handicraft stores in the city, take home some typical sweets (for example, coconut and peanut charamuscas in the shape of a mummy) or buy some pottery products.

Sightseeing in Guanajuato

The other city that was named a World Heritage Site in 2008 was San Miguel de Allende. In it you can discover its diverse cultural richness, conservation of buildings and monuments, as well as their architectural history.

We also want to tell you about the six magical towns of Guanajuato:

  • Dolores Hidalgo
  • Salvatierra
  • Yuriria
  • Jalpa de Canovas
  • Mineral de Pozos
  • Comonfort

Dolores Hidalgo, cradle of national independence, holds a lot of history of events that were decisive for the country. It is the birthplace of singer-songwriter José Alfredo Jiménez.

Salvatierra is known for its nature and vegetation. It was founded in 1644 by the Spanish.

You will also find the town of Yuriria, in the south. Its name derives from the Purépecha word Yuririhapúndaro, which means ”lake of blood”.

Another magical town is Jalpa de Canovas, known for being a group of old haciendas and towns, earning the nickname ”the granary of Mexico” for being one of the main food producers.

In Mineral de Pozos you will enjoy its different inns and spas (although we recommend that at some point you try the Sensoria Spa). In this small town you will see the ruins of old stately haciendas, cobblestone streets and a past full of glory.

To finish with the magical towns, we will tell you about Comonfort, a place full of legends, stories and tales that tell the different traditions.

What to see in León, Guanajuato

León is very touristic, known for its architecture, culture and tradition. Here you have to go to the triumphal arch of the Calzada de los Heroes, built in 1893.

You should also visit the house of culture of Diego Rivera, who was the husband of the artist Frida Khalo, visit the Basilica of the Holy Mother of Light, go to the Museum of Art and History of Guanajuato or the archaeological museum and historical archive, among many other plans.

What to do in Salamanca, Guanajuato

Discover the center of Salamanca, where you can see different old buildings, mansions, churches… Above all it is a place where you can do ecotourism and outdoor activities.

Take the nopal route, buy fried cactus, as well as products made from the same tree…you can even get to know the Valnopal cosmetics factory from the inside.

Attractions in San Felipe, Guanajuato

One of the activities for which San Felipe is known is pottery and mezcal production. Founded in 1521, it is also known as San Felipe Torres Mochas, due to the towers of the main church.

We recommend you to take the artisan route and see why they are outstanding potters. You can also book the route of the haciendas, or start excursions for hiking, mountaineering or simply to observe the flora and fauna.
