The exalted Himalayas gives us a feeling of awe, grandeur, and mystery for the explorers since eternity and Kanchenjunga, being the part of the majestic Himalayas, has been considered the third highest mountain in the world. Kanchenjunga is situated in the eastern Himalayas and also on the border between Sikkim, northeast India, and eastern Nepal. Kanchenjunga is visible in Darjeeling, Sikkim. The name “Kanchenjunga” has been derived from four Tibetan words which means “Five Treasuries of the Great Snow”, Kanchenjunga is mainly made of rocks and it is mostly covered with snow, however, the mountain peak and its glaciers receive the highest amount of snowfall during the summer and the light amount of snowfall during the winters.

Kanchenjunga is famous within trekkers and mountain explorers and they have discovered many different faces of this mountain in many years. After 1931, there had been two fatal accidents which created fear in the mind of the trekkers and this place also got a negative reputation for danger and difficulty. Since then, no one attempted to climb the mountain till 1954, partly because it received the negative reputation and partly the Nepalese also objected for the same, hence there was a mix of actions regarding the climbing of Kanchenjunga which was, to some extent, due to the religious beliefs of the Sikkimese as well. Among all the Kanchenjunga climbing milestones, there was the first woman, Briton Ginette Harrison to reach the summit in 1998, the first solo ascent, Pierre Beghin in1983 and the first ascent without the help of supplemental oxygen were Britons Peter Boardman, Doug Scott and Joe Tasker in 1979.
