Armando Manzanero, the famous Mexican singer, and composer died on the morning of December 28 after battling Covid-19 for weeks. He was hospitalized in mid-December after contracting the virus and according to the most recent statement from the singer-composer's press office, he was doing fine and even breathing on his own.

Armando Manzanero: Cause of death

The statement had read, "The teacher is on the right path, your lungs sound clear, the oxygen concentration of the respirator may have been lowered, which indicates that it has more lung autonomy." However, the news of his death caused by Covid-19 was confirmed by CNN. The man who has composed and worked on over 600 songs in his time as a composer enjoyed fan following from across the world. Artists such as Elvis Presley, Dionne Warwick, Perry Como, Spanish singer Raphael, and fellow Mexican star Luis Miguel have interpreted and even done cover versions of his music.

His songs have been sung in over 50 countries and one of his songs titled 'Somos Novios' which was translated by Sid Wayne, composer for Elvis Presley in English was even nominated for a Grammy. This version titled 'It's Impossible', was performed by Perry Como.

Manzanero fell ill after he opened his museum in Mérida, Yucatán and he was always considered a risk patient due to his age and long history of diabetes. Since he contracted the virus, his health deteriorated too quickly leading to his admission in the hospital. However, despite being sick, Manzanero continued to be active, either by writing songs or as head of the Society of Authors and Composers of Mexico (SACM).

María Elena Manzanero, one of the musician's daughters, had said before the actor's death: “It was sudden since we found out that he has Covid and he was very well, he was oxygenated very well, he was perfect and suddenly his oxygenation began to drop and oxygen was brought home, but suddenly it was not enough for optimal oxygenation and we had to come to the hospital, where he is very well cared for and isolated."

Who was Armando Manzanero married to?

The singer who is reportedly worth $40 million was married to Laura Elena. The couple tied the knot in 2014. However, Manzanero was married thrice before. First, he had tied the knot with his highschool sweetheart María Elena Arjona Torres whom he had dated for six years. They had got married in 1957 and the couple had four children — Martha, María Elena, Diego and Armando. However, they got divorced. He had then been in a relationship with a woman called Gloria, however, not much has been known about her since. He later married María Teresa Papiol Mirassou, a bank employee in 1991, but they reportedly broke up in 1998.

Manzanero's most controversial relationship happened to be between 2002 to 2006 when he had married Olga Aradillas. Their marriage ended in a scandal in 2006 after Aradillas sued the musician for mistreating her and called him out for physically assaulting her as well. According to local media reports at that time, however, Manzanero had pleaded not guilty to charges that were levied against him by Aradillas and had instead said, "I am innocent of what Mrs. Aradillas Lara blames me, I have never mistreated her, nor given any blow, but I do not allow them to offend my family and seek notoriety through the good name that I have carved for myself in so many years of artistic career."

After he overcame the allegations and the scandal itself, in 2014, Manzanero married Elena who is 36 years younger to him and she was with him during his struggle with Covid-19 as well. Manzanero will be cremated in Mexico City and his remains will be taken to his hometown of Merida, in Yucatan state.
