El Calendario Azteca o Piedra del Sol, es una de las expresiones culturales más famosas y reconocibles de México. Su expresión encierra una multitud de significados y simbolismos de la cosmovisión mesoamericana y hace tangible la perfección alcanzada por los aztecas en la astronomía.
Existen dos lecturas básicas de este monolito. La primera sucede al centro, donde se halla inscrita la leyenda de los soles que relata la existencia de cuatro mundos predecesores al actual y un quinto que refiere al mundo en el que vivimos representado por Tonatiuh (dios del Sol).
Y la segunda lectura, es la rueda de los días o Tonalli, la cual permite aproximarnos a la cosmovisión de un pueblo mediante 20 símbolos representativos de su cultura que heredó muchas de sus concepciones de sus antecesores mayas y toltecas; de ahí las coincidencias entre el calendario maya y azteca.
Los aztecas diseñaron 20 símbolos sagrados que representaban su filosofía, interpretación del mundo y los atributos que un ser humano debía desarrollar en su interior para hallar su propio camino.
Conforme a una forma de conteo que combina 13 números y los 20 signos antes mencionados, se obtiene el día (tonalli) que consiste de un número y un símbolo. A cada persona le corresponde uno, según su fecha de nacimiento.
