TEMPE, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University women's triathlon team finished fourth in the Division II team standings at the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships on Saturday here at Tempe Town North Lake Park. They tied for third but lost a tie-breaker by a tenth of a second.
Shannon Feran was the Mavericks' top individual finisher in the 67-woman field, placing eighth with a final time of one hour, eight minutes, 46.6 seconds.
Abigail White finished 17
th in 1:10.18.7 while
Paloma Suarez Davila was just behind in 18
th with a time of 1:10.46.
Natalie Mitchell was the team's fourth finisher, placing 22
nd in 1:11.28.0.
Hannah Croasdell (26
th, 1:12:58.0) and
Emma Polenske (34
th, 1:14:13.9) also finished for the Mavericks while
Megan Buchanan, who was leading the race, crashed at the start of the second bike lap and did not finish.
Queens University of Charlotte won the team title for the sixth straight year placing four triathletes in the top eight. The Royals scored 21 points while Wingate took second with 44. Lenoir Rhyne was third with 65 points, taking the tiebreaker over the Mavs.
CMU also finished fourth in 2017 and 2019 and second in 2018. The 2020 championship was canceled.
Wingate's Finja Schierl won the individual title in 1:06:15.7 while Natalia Hidalgo Martinez of Davis & Elkins took second in 1:06.25.8. Queen's Natalie Bush rounded out the top 3 in 1:07:52.4.
Earlier in the day,
Torin Lackmann finished the Sun Devil Draft Legal Classic in 1:15.27.1 to place ninth in the women's 19 and under age group flight.
Maddy Watkins was eighth in the 20-24 age group with a time of 1:17:16.0.
