Growing up in my house meant having “Pan De Jamón” during the holidays. My dad, being Venezuelan, always did a great job keeping some Venezuelan culture around the house, and this by far is one of my favorite traditions. “Pan de Jamón” simply means “Ham Bread”. It’s a great side for any big holiday dinner. They sell it in every bakery during the holidays in Venezuela. My dad always made it at home, since we were a bit far from a bakery. In other words, growing up in the states made it a bit harder to go get it, haha. This is a tradition I’ve continued with my little family as well. The smell reminds me of home, so what better tradition to continue, right? I was brave enough to start baking it last year and was surprised on how easy it was to make. The ingredients are super easy to find and it could be the next great dish you bring to a party.
PAN DE JAMÓN (Ham Bread)
Ingredients:
– One bread loaf. (I recommend a loaf of “Bridgford Ready Dough”)
– 1/2 pound of Brown Sugar Ham.
– 1/4 pound of Gouda Cheese.
– Maple Bacon (5 to 6 strips)
– Raisins and Olives. (To taste)
– 1 egg and with a Tsp. Sugar (to “varnish”)
Preparation:
Roll out the dough with a rolling pin. Arrange the ham, cheese, bacon, olives and the raisins (except for a small part at the end, so you can seal the bread up). Roll it up like a Swiss roll. In a small bowl mix the egg with the sugar and brush on the bread already rolled up. Bake at 350° F for 30 minutes or until bread is golden. Serve cool, even though warm tastes pretty darn good too!
At the end it should look a little like this!
Have you had “Pan De Jamón” before? What traditions do you try to keep alive in your house?
Hope you get inspired!
I copied down the recipe and will give it a try. Who knows, this may become our new tradition. Thanks
