Rick Deckard is the main character in this novel. He is a bounty hunter whose job is to kill androids for money. However, while Rick's job is what causes him to kill androids and all that good stuff, his development over time is the most significant factor.
The most important thing to analyze about Rick is his empathy level. He starts out as a character lacking empathy, as he is unable to discern why his wife would subject herself to depression. Rick seems inhuman at this point; he has strayed so far from empathy that he doesn't even believe that feeling negative emotions is normal. His lack of empathy is also shown when he killed Polokov; he shot him in the head with pretty much no mercy, and was pretty pleased about a free 1000$ for shooting a robot's head. However, as time passes, Rick develops; he meets Luba Luft, and his admiration for her sparks a personality change. As he restrains himself from killing her (only for Phil Resch to do it instead), he develops an ability to feel empathy. He contrasts himself with Resch, highlighting his personal development. His ability to feel empathy towards androids solidifies when he gets into a relationship with Rachael Rosen; this highlights his development greatly, and shows that he is able to feel love. At the very end of the novel, the way that he is able to care for the electric toad highlights his empathetic handicap coming to an end, as he joins the ranks of Iran and Isidore in empathy.
Anyway, that's basically Rick for you. There's a lot more that I could say, but I know you want to get one to the other people. Enjoy!
